Series of 5: 2002-2008
Flax, abaca, and kozo papers with detritus and maps, monoprint, stamping, archival inkjet, drawing and staples
12″ x 14″ x 1″
Two weeks after 9/11, I entered the nether regions around Ground Zero to check if the Ampersand Foundation’s apartment still existed. I walked amongst the abandoned buildings covered in thick layers of dust, with trees covered in paper detritus as if they had genetically altered leaves.
I grabbed some of these papers and some handfuls of the powder; much later I made paper with pulp filled with these remains, along with ripped up maps of New York City.
What resulted, eventually, was a series of five, Detritus, each one a different book, each attempting to understand ‘life afterwards…’ here in my hometown. The first three were completed in 2002, the last two in 2008.
